I'm A Homer

Recently I discovered the wonderful record that is Just A Fire's "Light Up". How did I miss this gem over the last few years?!?! I tried to describe it to someone, and ended up saying that it was like a dubby mix of The Clash and Jawbox. As awful as that may sound, it doesn't! Hooray for awkward sentence structure. This is yet another non-ska record that has been overlooked by the world thanks to being a part of the Asian Man Records roster.

Speaking of, I saw the Andrew Jackson Jihad record in the ska section of Streetlight Records yesterday. Great work there guys! Andrew Jackson Jihad are on tour now, tonight in Santa Cruz, and tomorrow in San Jose, a show that I'm organizing. GO! I'm sure if you read this blog, you probably already know about this show anyway, but if you don't, here:

In summation, most of my favorite records from 2007 were Asian Man releases, Bomb The Music Industry's "Get Warmer" and AJJ's "People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World" actually having been released year, and Just A Fire's "Light Up", which I finally discovered this year. Woohoo!

Schwachan

I had the pleasure of seeing "Pumping Iron" last night, the bodybuilding movie featuring Arnold Schwarznegger and Lou Ferrigno among others. The direction and soundtrack were executed perfectly to emphasize how meaningless bodybuilding is. The movie also shows pretty clearly how disgusting of a person Arnold Schwarznegger really is.

For further proof, watch this amazing Youtube clip:

Bookhunter

I just finished reading Bookhunter by Jason Shiga, and it was ridiculously and enjoyably over the top. Without giving too much away, it's like a pulp action story about a detective and his team who are investigating the theft of a rare antique Bible. The artwork is deceptively simple, but actually does a great job of accentuating the moods of the characters and of the action sequences. There's a lot of technical jargon relating to book binding and the running of a library, which is so over the top considering the subject matter of this "gritty" crime story, that one can't help but find it absurdly entertaining.

If you want a taste of some Jason Shiga before checking out this book, check out his comic FLEEP.

Thanks to Biguglyadam for introducing me to Jason Shiga all those years ago.

NIIICE NIIICE NI NIIIIICENINCIENIONIIIIIIIICE

Holy moly.

I've been listening to lots of KNBR lately. Those of you who know me may or may not know that I love me some sports talk radio. I'm not super into sports, perhaps with the exception of baseball, but the local sports talk talent it unbelievable. Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert are a great duo, nonstop laughs, really smart, and just all around lovable people. Bob Fitzgerald and Rod Brooks are likable enough, occasionally funny, and almost entertaining enough when not. At least they're more interesting than news-talk and top-40 radio.

The real king, though, is Gary Radnich. His show isn't so much sports talk, but rather a sports-related front for a middle-aged white guy to talk about hip-hop, getting down with the ladies, and all sorts of useless pop-culture trivia. When Gary is on a roll, it's especially great hearing him, first, groan when a caller wants to talk about trivial sports matter, and, second, immediately cut the caller off to resume talking about whatever random "good knowledge" he's dropping on the audience that day. Gary also surrounds himself with hilarious talent: Ray Woodson is his straight man, an equally knowledgeable pop culture aficionado; Tony Bruno, the most famous sports talk host nationwide, is Gary's only competition when it comes to obnoxious old white men with a knowledge of hip-hop; Dan Dibley, young goofy announcer whose son provides so many child-versions of Gary's rotation of catchphrases, including: "Good knowledge"; "You gots to get down"; "GOODBYE"; etc; (I don't really know how to use colons and semicolons); The various interns and producers, Mike, Thin Tim, and others also provide for good laughs as Gary's motley sidekicks.

Today, Gary and Tony were talking about Amy Winehouse. Tony was talking about her first date on tour which totally flopped and how she was booed savagely. Gary's first comment on her was that "I can't even look at her!" which I totally agreed with, because she looks totally disgusting. They also dissed her singing and songs, which I also agreed with. She certainly ain't no Sean Kingston!!!

----------------

I recently saw a few good movies, here's a quick roundup:

Troll 2: Horrible. VERY funny.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance: Very funny, great use of dark comedy, until the end when it's totally dark without any comedy at all. Probably the most depressing of all of Park Chan Wook's revenge trilogy. This killed the mood for everyone on halloween, hooray for me suggesting we watch it! Bae Du-Na is hella cute in this.

The Host: Another great dark comedy from Korea. I think that the commentary and it's execution in the film was great. Bae Du-Na is not as cute in this, but still tight.

Milo & Otis: Cutest movie of all time? Probably. Bae Du-Na may be cute, but she has nothing to do with this ultra cute movie.

Going to see the new Joe Strummer documentary that comes out here tomorrow (not so new in other parts of the world, I know).

-----------

On a side note, have you guys out there ever wanted to go up to a girl and totally platonically tell her how beautiful she may be? I wanna do this all time, but I don't wanna seem like a creep! Why are there so many pretty girls out there?

------------

AHHHH! I know there's more I wanted to write about, but it's 2:30 AM practically and my brain is fried.

Join, or Die... with a vengeance

In case you don't know, the Join, Or Die collective of musicians from Santa Cruz, CA are pretty much the best thing ever. They've slowed down their activity as of late, but my formative years as a music fan would've been meaningless had Slow Gherkin, The Huxtables, Good Night and others not been a part of it. In fact, I think Slow Gherkin is the most underrated band of all time, even among fans of the ska niche in which they were abandoned by the world at large.

Having said all this, what the heck is up with this: http://jod.no-place.com/
News Flash! You aren't Join, Or Die! The Mae Shi may be the bees knees to greasy-haired, thrift store robbing, Xiu Xiu zealots worldwide, but by 2003 (when their phony JOD was established) the real JOD had already been around and experienced its peak! Heck, Xiu Xiu could've told them that!

Poseurs! The whole lot of 'em!

P.S. I just watched a youtube video of that band Midori, whose singer blurs out her eyes in all their promotional material... WHAT A BUNCH OF F@$*ING GARBAGE!!! Pure marketing b.s.

Hoosier Love?

I got the scoop on a special Mu330 show going on tonight in Santa Cruz as part of their singer Dan Potthast's wedding celebrations. The bride and groom's relatives and friends gathered at the P Street house, and Mu330 played all the hits!!!... until the cops came and told them to cut the noise. It was a special night and I'm glad I could be a part of it, now I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

WEIRDOS

Boy oh boy, have I had some creepy moments in my life, but even at my worst I have never been nearly as awesome (I mean DESPICABLE) as these guys. So, without further ado, on with the wacked out reviewers on YELP:

David A.
edit :I changed my score. Not a friendly place anymore.Good looking- Nazi cashier's unfriendly attitude finally drove me away.

I WONDER WHY???????? If this guy is 1/100th as creepy in real life as he is here...

Mike H.
This guy isn't so much creepy, as just a creep.

Boy, it's a slow day at work.

In other news, I won't be doing my show for the remainder of the quarter. Hopefully I'll be back in late September or October though. I'll try to keep this badboy updated with stuff of note, so keep checking back!

Don't get caught with your pants down... again!!!

Mineta Kazunobu, the singer of my favorite band in the world, The Ging Nang Boyz, was arrested for removing his little short shorts in front of thousands at the Formoz Festival in Taiwan. NICE??? This is his second time being arrested for public indecency, the first coming in front of a crowd of 45,000 at the 2005 Rock In Japan Festival.

Check these links below for more dirt:
Article 1
Article 2

This is the best quote ever:
"After the concert, we took him to the police bureau," police officer Tang Se-huai said. "He appeared scared and nervous, saying he did not know he was not supposed to do this in Taiwan."

Ging Nang Boyz will be releasing a new single entitled "I Don't Wanna Die" (or AIDONWANADAI as they transcribe it) on August 22. You can peep their site at http://www.hatsukoi.biz for more info.

There'll be no tears in the end

Excerpt from "No Tears" by Scarface:
I've got this killer up inside of me
I can't talk to my mother, so I talk to my diary
I'm goin off on the deep end
I find myself face to face with myself while I'm sleepin
I see your picture in my head and my hands shake
You can run, you can hide, but there's no escape
My inner feelings show no mercy on my enemy
I got to get this muthafucka before he gets to me
So in your own blood you'll bathe
And I won't stop until I put this muthafucka in his fuckin grave
And I can say this once again
You can cry but you'll still die, there'll be no tears in the end

"Mind Playin' Tricks On Me" by the Geto Boys:
At night I can't sleep, I toss and turn
Candle sticks in the dark, visions of bodies bein burned
Four walls just starin at a nigga
I'm paranoid, sleepin with my finger on the trigger
My mother's always stressin I ain't livin right
But I ain't going out without a fight
See, everytime my eyes close
I start sweatin, and blood starts comin out my nose
It's somebody watchin the Ak'
But I don't know who it is, so I'm watchin my back
I can see him when I'm deep in the covers
When I awake I don't see the motherfucker
He owns a black hat like I own
A black suit and a cane like my own
Some might say, "Take a chill, B"
But fuck that shit! There's a nigga trying to kill me
I'm poppin in the clip when the wind blows
Every twenty seconds got me peepin out my window
Investigatin the joint for traps
Checkin my telephone for taps
I'm starin at the woman on the corner
It's fucked up when your mind is playin tricks on ya

I make big money, I drive big cars
Everybody know me, it's like I'm a movie star
But late at night, somethin ain't right
I feel I'm being tailed by the same sucker's head lights
Is it that fool that I ran off the block?
Or is it that nigga last week that I shot?
Or is it the one I beat for five thousand dollars
Thought he had 'caine but it was Gold Medal Flour
Reach under my seat, grabbed my popper for the suckers
Ain't no use to me lyin, I was scareder than a motherfucker
Hooked a left into Popeye's and bailed out quick
If it's goin down let's get this shit over with
Here they come, just like I figured
I got my hand on the motherfuckin trigger
What I saw'll make your ass start gigglin
Three black, crippled and crazy senior citizens
I live by the sword
I take my boys everywhere I go, because I'm paranoid
I keep lookin over my shoulder and peepin around corners
My mind is playin tricks on me

Day by day it's more impossible to cope
I feel like I'm the one that's doing dope
Can't keep a steady hand because I'm nervous
Every Sunday mornin I'm in service
Prayin for forgiveness
And tryin to find an exit out the business
I know the Lord is lookin at me
But yet and still it's hard for me to feel happy
I often drift while I drive
Havin fatal thoughts of suicide
BANG and get it over with
And then I'm worry-free, but that's bullshit
I got a little boy to look after
And if I died then my child would be a bastard
I had a woman down with me
But to me it seemed like she was down to get me
She helped me out in this shit
But to me she was just another bitch
Now she's back with her mother
Now I'm realizing that I love her
Now I'm feelin lonely
My mind is playin tricks on me

This year Halloween fell on a weekend
Me and Geto Boys are trick-or-treatin
Robbin little kids for bags
Till an old man got behind our ass
So we speeded up the pace
Took a look back, and he was right before our face
He'd be in for a squabble no doubt
So I swung and hit the nigga in his mouth
He was goin down, we figured
But this was no ordinary nigga
He stood about six or seven feet
Now, that's the nigga I'd be seein in my sleep
So we triple-teamed on him
Droppin them motherfuckin B's on him
The more I swung the more blood flew
Then he disappeared and my boys disappeared, too
Then I felt just like a fiend
It wasn't even close to Halloween
It was dark as fuck on the streets
My hands were all bloody, from punchin on the concrete
God damn, homie
My mind is playin tricks on me

Excerpts from "Dirty Bitch" by Bushwick Bill:
It started out beautiful, but you was playin possum
To me, you was just a fuck, but our relationship blossomed
Got attached to your kids, I loved 'em like my own
I loved 'em like my own
Referred to your daughter as my daughter, your son as my son
Called you my wife, even if it was common law
Never saw a better creature in my life
How could the one who stole my heart, make me reach for my knife
(Why you reachin for your knife?) Cause I'ma stab that bitch
(What if they take your freedom Bill?) They can have that shit
....
Why you wanna bring me down?
Why you wanna bring me down? You dirty bitch

Man, the heaviness of the Geto Boys lyrics never really hit me until tonight. I always knew how extreme they were, but the total paranoia and utter sadness is what really makes them great. To them, the life of a gangster is a double-edged sword, and the way they rap about it is so amazing to me. I always wondered why rappers loved the movie Scarface so much, because it seems like they only paid attention to Tony's rise up the ladder, hustling his way to wealth and notoriety, while somehow managing to ignore the consequences of his actions that lead to his downfall. For once, I kind of understand the movie's appeal, but only among the likes of the Geto Boys, of whom the rapper Scarface is appropriately a member. I can't think of anything more articulate to write to wrap up this paragraph... but dang, this is seriously some heavy stuff.

HERNIA

I heard about this song from my aunt of all people, and it's very funny and cute. Not unlike the blood covered bandage on my stomach from this hernia surgery I just had. Hooray!

My Dream Girl

The lovely Shiina Ringo's band Tokyo Jihen has a new song entitled "OSCA". It grew on me really fast. There's also 6 different postings of it on youtube.

Really Get Down!

HOLY CRAP!!! I just discovered a 12 minute version of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up"!!! SO GOOD!!! Now, it is not only the best soul jam ever, but also the longest, wankiest, best soul jam ever.

GAH!!!! 2K7

There are few things in life that truly get me all worked up and angry. Mainly, I can't stand listening to or watching a sports game where my team is losing. It gives me unnecessary stress that really isn't founded upon any good reason, so I'm usually pretty quick to turn away from such games. The other thing in life that really makes me angry are stupid drivers!!!

While it's easy enough to turn off a game, you can't avoid a stupid driver. Stupid drivers can easily ruin what is otherwise a fairly relaxing pasttime and totally turn your sunny driving disposition sour. Here are the traits of a wack driver:
  • They use their brake when the space between them and the next car is giant. HEY PENDEJO, let up off of the gas pedal instead!!!
  • They tailgate you despite lanes to the right and left of you being completely free of traffic.
  • They don't pull up far enough at a stop light, so they don't trigger the sensor that makes the light change.
  • They parallel park head first.
  • They drive slowly in the fast lane. This sort of crappy driving ALWAYS results in traffic backups as people have to worm their way through and around other slow cars to pass these troglodytes.
Man, I could probably go on for days. I would sell my car if I could manage life without it, but I'm just not disciplined enough.

Party Party Party

VBS.tv, the online broadcasting branch of Vice Magazine, has a show called "Soft Focus" hosted by Ian Svevonius of Nation of Ulysses. Accompanying his interview with Andrew WK is this interview from an old issue of Vice in 2000. While Vice is one of the stupidest magazines around, this interview is not, and I felt hip for having read this interview in the original magazine despite hating Vice magazine.

Shortcake pt. 4

Today 3 brothers came into my work with the most 1994-haircuts ever, each a variation of the look immortalized by Rider Strong of Boy Meets World fame. Their last name also happened to be PAGAN.

It reminded me of this dude who came into the store once wearing a bright orange t-shirt, orange baseball cap, and an orange-chamoflage skirt! He also had a goatee, and his name was TROLLMAN. He also smelled like week old carrion.

The Pagans were well groomed and polite though, they just happened to look like they came out of a timewarp, or like they'd been hiding out in a bunker listening to Tripping Daisy for the last 15 years.

Also

Dear Blogosphere

Oh how I have neglected thee.

Recap of the last few weeks/months/epochs:
-The season finale of Heroes was a little disappointing, but the season as a whole was great. I'm looking to forward to seeing what they cook up for season 2. Did anyone else catch the allusion to a WORSE villain than Syler, when the girl referenced a villain who could see her when she thinks of him?
-I saw the season finale of Lost despite ignoring the rest of the season. It started out to so weak, but I heard that it got really good after that... I dunno man, I'm pretty skeptical.
-The Shield continues to be totally insane/amazing.
-I saw Mike Hale, Matt Skiba and Chuck Ragan play a big show in San Jo. Chuck Ragan's set was a pleasant surprise, a step up from the usual singer songwriter stuff that punks are wont to deliver once they step away from a band.
-I went with Chirpy Boy to see Ted Leo at Slim's for the 2nd time in a month. Aside from the large contingent of bros and drunk dads at the show, it was one of the better times I've seen Ted Leo.
-Saw The Ergs and Lemuria last night in San Jose and was incredibly pleased to see such a last minute show get such a good turnout. Hooray for you San Jose, I won't write you off completely just yet.
-I movie-hopped with a beautiful young lady and saw Hot Fuzz and Pirates 3. I loved Shawn of the Dead so Hot Fuzz's awesomeness wasn't a surprise, but Pirates was surprisingly good considering that I haven't seen either of the first 2 in the series, and also the bad reviews that the movie has been receiving. I may even go back to see it again to catch the parts that I slept through.
-I missed seeing Manu Chao and The Hold Steady who were playing at competing shows 2 nights ago. Did anyone go to either, and if so, how was it?
-I'm currently listening to the new album from Your Song Is Good. I'll need more time to soak it in, but it looks like these masters of instrumental caribbean-lounge-soul-ska are back in fine form.
-I went to Fanimecon in San Jose for work, peddling anime wares to nerds. A lot more people are dressing up these days than they used to, and male nerds are learning to bathe more often. I did, however, meet the stupidest fan ever, and she kindly allowed me to make fun of her ruthlessly for at least 5 minutes. Whatever compelled her to withstand my abuse is something I don't understand, but I'm simultaneously grateful/annoyed that she stuck around so long.

That's it! For all of you radio listening folks, the show last week with Morgan was totally fun to do. Next week I'll be having guest DJ JJ down to the station to play annoying J-pop.

Despicable People

I was reading up on this comics artist Joe Matt whose stuff I was interested in reading when I stumbled upon this dual interview with him and Rivers Cuomo. All I'd heard about Joe Matt was that he was a totally despicable weirdo with extreme social problems, but seeing him here in comparison with Rivers Cuomo, well...

TV PARTY

Yesterday I watched the premier of the 6th season of THE SHIELD. I usually don't like cop shows and bad-boy anti-heros, but THE SHIELD is just too intense to not be enthalled by. Here's a simple description of what has happened in every episode since episode 1, season 1: Something bad from before is haunting Vic (the bad boy anti-hero played by Michael Chiklis) and his team, and they're scrambling to solve the problem, or cover up the problem. Instead of fixing things, things keep getting worse and worse. IT'S SO INTENSE!!! This season, Forest Whitaker is back as a deranged IA cop trying to take down Vic. Sure enough, after just one episode, Vic is getting his ish f-ed up!!!

I also went back to watching The Office, which is like every horribly awkward social situation ever crammed into one awesome/unwatchable show. The stories and characters are so compelling because of the genuine humanity portrayed, but I almost feel like I'd rather avert my eyes and be spared the pain of watching these social train wrecks pile up one after the other. SO GOOD!!!

Heroes returns to TV with new episodes April 23... NIIICE!!! I can't wait!!!!

F-ed Up Japanese TV

I've been to Japan 3 times. Honestly, that's not enough to time to gauge the quality of different things, but my experiences regarding television there have been almost completely negative. Whenever I would flip on the TV it would be nothing but stupid variety shows with fat dudes eating some remote town's specialty cuisine and screaming, "Aw yeah! That's hella tasty!" or, the other type of variety show would just be a bunch of 3rd rate celebrities watching a documentary about some remote town's specialty cuisine and nodding in amazement, "Oooooh! How interesting!" Needless to say, it's horrible, horrible television. Thanks to the magic of youtube, I've been exposed to some genuinely awesome Japanese shows. Congratulations Japanese TV, you convinced me that you don't totally suck.

Hard Gay
Razor Ramon Hard Gay is some wacked out comedian/wrestler who made his name by running up to people on the street and humping them. I thought he was kind of amusing before, but not great. Here he is facind former pornstar Nao Oikawa in a competition to see who can be the sexiest with unsexy objects. I thought it was a very funny video. DO YOU???

W.E.B. Du Bomb

The new Ted Leo video for Bomb.Repeat.Bomb. I suppose the apolitical haters of the world probably don't like this song. I like how annoying it is, especially since most of the Shake the Sheets loving Ted Leo fans are probably like "OMG, WTF!!!"

Shena, Shena! Shena, Shena, Shenaaaa-aaah!

I wrote a review of Shena Ringo's new album on Keikaku. Peep it HERE if you'd like.

After that, you should watch this video of the lovely Ringo with her band Tokyo Jihen. GAH!!! SHE'S SO PRETTY!

Half-Hearted Update!

I've seen some shows recently:

Ted Leo @ Great American Music Hall
The band who was main support was kinda cool, but I forget what their name was. Ted Leo was even more cool, possibly ICE COLD. He played a great mixture of songs from every album between The Tyranny Distance and Living With the Living. He also ended his encore with a Chumbawumba cover. I think half the crowd was underwhelmed by the new songs, and the encore, but that's just 'cuz they can't handle Ted Leo. He's too real for them. YEAH, I WENT THERE. At the risk of sounding like a total dufus, I'm actually pretty serious about that. Ted Leo likes what he likes, writes what he likes, and represents it to the fullest. If you don't like Ted Leo playing a Chumbawumba song then you are A) a moron, B)unaware that Chumbawumba isn't just "Tubthumping", C) a moron. Sure, it may seem a strange choice for a cover, but only if you haven't considered the awesome cross-section of artists he's covered, including Jimmy Cliff, Lauryn Hill, Split Enz, The Jam, etc... In conclusion, Ted Leo is TOIGHT.

GO!GO!7188 @ The Independent
Go!Go!7188 headlined the 2007 edition of the annual Japan Nite tour, which included acts such as HY, Oreskaband, The 50 Kaitenz and Asakusa Jinta. A quick rundown of each band's performance is as follows:

Asakusa Jinta: Weird ragtime, but with a saxophonist prettier than possibly any girl I've ever seen, and also with a voice more annoying than any girl I've ever heard. Overall, an enjoyable band.

The 50 Kaitenz: Run of the mill garage rock band, but with some enjoyable antics, lyrics and banter. The guitarist looked a mixture of Mineta from Ging Nang Boyz and Jason from Short Round.

Oreskaband: A 6-piece, all school-girl ska band. They really love the Specials. They used the song "Little Bitch" as their intro music, but apparently I'm the only person who found that hilarious. They covered "Monkey Man", albeit not a true Specials song, and it was significantly better than the butchered piece of crap that these girls had the gall to release on CD. The rest of their songs were cheesy 3rd wave that I probably would've enjoyed when I was 15, but now I can't really stomach that sort of stuff. Nevertheless, their energy was great. In particular, the trumpeter and trombonist's rapport and banter made me enjoy their set. They gave a lesson on Osaka-ben, or as they called it "New Osaka language". This is where the American audience was treated to a skit involving two crazy girls pretending to fight and one of them screams "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!!!"

HY: Think of this band as Maroon 5, John Mayer, and Vanilla Ice rolled into one horrible band. What I'm trying to say is that this band was whiter than the whitest, soul-lacking gringo, and they aren't even white!!! Apparently every Japanese person alive loves this band. I walked out in the middle of their set and was pleasantly surprised to see at least 40 red-blooded Americans outside with me avoiding the sonic torture that is HY.

Go!Go!7188: Everyone from outside came back in to catch Go!Go!, even though a bunch of wack Japanese fans left after HY had finished. BAH! Good riddance, I say. Go!Go! is amazing, and I had forgotten just how good until I saw them again. They started out with "Jet Ninjin" from their first album, and ripped through a set of classics, including "Thunder Girl", "C7" and "Ukifune". The encore "Bungu" was terrific as well. The best quote of the night came from the weird lifeless singer Yuu when she said, seemingly unprompted, "I am not child. I am adult."

Some doofus videotaped the band setting up at the show and posted it HERE on youtube, but didn't actually videotape any of their set. What a dufus?? HUH? Yeah, I know.

Taft's Brigade and Pteradon @ Graeme Matthew
There's not much I could say about Pteradon and TB that I haven't said before (albeit not in this blog). They are tight.

BUT, the other bands this night were like every ska-punk band from 1997-2000 reincarnated in a new generation of kids who don't know better. Between them, they played at least 4 Rancid covers, and 2 bands covered the same song twice that night, NOFX's "Bob". I love me some ska, and I love me some punk, but I just wish these sorts of bands wouldn't base all their musical ideas on Rancid and NOFX. How about ripping off some better bands, like Operation Ivy or Fruity? Having formerly been in a mediocre ska-punk band, I totally know what I'd wanna do were I start another ska-punk band.

I'm Free!!!

Today I woke up to discover that the water heater in my house had exploded. Instead of dousing myself with freezing water in the shower, I instead took a slightly less demeaning path by giving myself a sponge bath. GAH!!!

Then, on the way to work I heard the new Killers and Fallout Boy singles. Maybe they aren't so new. Regardless, The Killers sound nothing like Bruce Springsteen, and this whole Americana schtick that they're perpetrating is totally wack. The Fallout Boy song sounds like Bell Biv Devoe's attempt to be a cookie-cutter emo band, or, more appropriately, Fallout Boy's attempt to be anything but a cookie-cutter emo band. Now I remember why I exclusively listen to sports talk radio.

On the way home from work I heard a song about ghost riding the whip set to the music of Ray Parker Jr.'s tribute to Huey Lewis, "Ghostbusters".
"Whatcha gonna do? GHOST RIDE IT!"

Speaking of Ray Parker Jr....

Check out homeboy's website here!!!

Shows - A Backlog

Last week I went to see a show in San Francisco. I walked in the door of the High Dive, off of the Embarcadero, and right as I was about to start talking to my homey James from Push to Talk, this total middle-aged, a-hole, hyphen-loving, schmooze-bag tries to buy us all drinks and then talk our ears off about his genius business ventures in Shanghai:
"Yeah man, all these jazz cats who went to Korea and Japan 10 years ago have ended up in China and they're opening up these killer studios in Shanghai. CAN YOU IMAGINE RECORDING IN SHANGHAI? How much do you think that would be?"

"I dunno. You just record until the label cuts off the money!" (laughs shared by all)

(oblivious to anything anyone else has said) "Well what we're doing, we're pairing up bands with DJs, DJs are big in China. People in China don't know about music, they just like booze, so we're pairing up our music tours with Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker, and we're driving these party buses around with DJs. You see, what we got going, we got these buses with hydraulics, so we just drive around and set up and start rockin' with the DJs.

"Yeah, I'm sure setting up your party bus in Tiananmen Square is a genius idea." (more laughs at his expense)

"Actually, we're working with a club right around the corner from there. But, anyway, what we're doing is working with these DJs. We just paired up the Rolling Stones with them out there, it was great. Chinese people love music, music is huge in China. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW COOL THAT WOULD BE? Wouldn't you love going to China and recording then touring?" So anyway, what band are you in anyway?"

"I'm not in any of the bands tonight."

"Oh well anyway, What we're doing in China is real cool. Wouldn't it be killer to record in Shanghai and be the first one. You could call it the Shanghai Sessions. We'd bring the bands out there and pair them up with DJs. People in China, are just waiting for us to serve up some rock to them. You know what I'm saying?"

The worst part about all this was that me and my friend Skylar got cornered, so we were both trying to find a way out of it without having to ditch the other. I really had to go to the bathroom, so I skipped out halfway and left Skylar to fend for himself. I felt bad for leaving him there, so I finished up quickly and went back to find Skylar outside among a few other people, so I thought they could provide enough distraction for us, but bald homeboy wouldn't relent!! That's when we just called him on his bluff and told him, "LISTEN DUDE. Sign me a check and we'll fly to China and record, tour, party down, whatever. If you can't do that for us, SHUT THE F UP!!!!!!!!!"

Anyway, even after escaping from homeboy's fly-eating mouth, the show showed no signs of starting on time. So me and Skylar and a couple of his homeboys drove off to the Mission to get burritos. We hit up Los Farolitos, a place I've been to a couple of times before. The food was especially good this time, but the salsa wasn't so great. I'll stick with EL ABUELO in SAN JO, thank you very much!

We drove back to the show and got there in time to see most of Coke vs. Bills' set. The members of CvB are the bassist Joe and guitarist Matt from Rx Bandits, though Matt plays drums in CvB. Pretty much just a trashy, garagey hardcore band, just bass and guitar, with some really cool vocal interplay between the 2 members.

Up next, after much drunken revelry/procrastinating, the next band finally got up to perform... PUSH TO TALK! NIIIICE.

I haven't seen them in quite a while, in almost a year probably. Since that time they've acquired a new drummer (ex-KGB), new guitarist (ex-A Burning Water), and a new bassist (ex-Push to Talk guitarist). I was kind of skeptical about how it would turn out, but they were really together, in a way that can't really be described. Together in energy, mood, purpose. Purpose? I told you I couldn't really describe it!!! It was really nice to see them again. I felt bad for having doubted their tightness for a even a second. I hear that they have their album out in Japan now, and that it's selling like HOT CAKES!!! Has anyone ever actually seen a hot cake sell though? Maybe it's not selling so well after all?????
